OUR ROOTS

Many autumns have passed with Tina and her family gathering to harvest the persimmon trees at her maternal grandparents’ home. The cool, crisp air of Northern California ripened the persimmons and turned the leaves a deep shade of orange-red, nearly concealing the sweet treasures from their sight. Each harvest provided an abundance of persimmons to distribute amongst family and friends. The sharing of this coveted fruit served as an act of love in their Vietnamese culture.

Through the lens of Chinese Medicine, Fall is the season of dryness and a time when the Lungs are most easily affected. In turn, nature offers persimmons at the right time as they are known to moisturize the Lungs and relieve coughs.

This knowledge stems from Tina’s reverence for her late father, Dr. Pham, who illuminated her path to becoming a Chinese Medicine practitioner. Dr. Pham was a pioneer as one of the first Vietnamese Doctors of Asian Medicine in the Bay Area community for over 40 years. He specialized in auricular acupuncture and herbal medicine to treat internal and chronic conditions. Dr. Pham helped multiple generations heal and inspired many to pursue careers in acupuncture and natural medicine.

In Buddhism, persimmons are known as spiritual symbols of transformation. Green, bitter persimmons represent ignorance; while sweet, ripened persimmons represent the wisdom that comes with maturity. Tina honors her late father’s legacy and through her own transformative healing, Persimmon Acupuncture came to be.

In Honor of Dad
